One side of each subject's face was treated with red LED light at a wavelength of 633 nm for 20 minutes immediately after the surgery, followed by a similar treatment 48 hours post-surgery and twice a week for the subsequent week, always on the same facial side.
Subjects were evaluated 24 and 48 hours after the surgery, at seven and ten days, and at two, three, and six weeks.
The resolution of erythema, edema, and bruising over the days was assessed using digital photography and reviewed by a team of plastic surgeons.
The half of the face treated with LED healed after an average of 13 days, compared to 26.8 days needed for the resolution of the untreated side.
It is easy to see how red light LED phototherapy has halved the complete healing time.
